100 Projects

So I finally have an update for the blog…if there are any readers left. 

I recently graduated (May) and have been on the hunt for a job ever since. In the mean time, in order to both occupy myself and keep others from going insane because I won’t stop bothering them with my unemployment, I’ve kinda taken it upon myself to start trolling pinterest and etsy. Pretty hardcore. 

No, I’m not posting mean comments or anything like that; I know typically that’s what trollers are best known for. I’ve mostly been hunting down projects like it’s my job. I suppose my unemployment mentality is “Oh, that looks awesome! I can do that…” 

Something I am sure the boyfriend is less than thrilled about. He seems to be coming home to a new project every day. In my defense, a majority of it is related to our upcoming wedding. He should be glad that I’m spending the time working on projects that are ultimately saving us money. At least, that’s how I’m justifying it to myself. 

So the projects coupled with my baking and amateur decorating have led me to assign a new challenge to myself. I think, during this unemployment time while I am waiting for ANY sort of job to contact me, I am going to try to accomplish as many projects as I can. The ultimate goal is 100 and the projects I’m including are decorations for the house, sewing projects, and cake projects. 

Maybe I’ll finally learn how to make a goddamn chocolate rose. And if I ever figure that one out, expect some really intense bragging on here. I’m going to be stoked. 

Luckily for you all, that seems highly unlikely. 

In the two months since my graduation, I have done quite a few of projects; I’ll start slowly posting those on here so that I can keep track of what I’ve done and what I’m counting as a “project”. 

Feel free to call bullshit if you think I’m cheating…

What? Still Alive?

It’s true!

Despite an almost complete disappearance from the wordpress community over the last couple of months, I have not actually died. I have just been very busy finishing up my undergrad and pretending to go on about my adult life. Unfortunately, my current unemployment status begs to argue with the fact that I am actually an adult and not one hopeless bum.

But alas, my recent unemployed status has given me nothing better to do than mess around with fondant, cupcakes, and other delicious treats. And the primary beneficiaries have been the boyfriend’s coworkers. It seems like at least once a week now I load up the cupcake carrier with things I made to test out a recipe and have no interest in eating (at least, that I should have no interest in eating…) and send him on his way.

And, surprisingly enough, it has resulted in a limited amount of business and cupcake requests. Over the last couple of months, both of his bosses contacted me to ask me to make cupcakes for events they were hosting or going to. Which resulted in me making some cupcakes based on the kids movie Cars and some barnyard cupcakes (I’ll include some pictures).

Recently, I’ve been fiddling around with cake pops because…I mean, what else do I have to do? Spoiler Alert: they’re time consuming and a total pain in the ass. I’ll make a separate post about them with some step by step instructions if any of you are actually silly enough to decide that you’re going to make them. Don’t worry: I’ll be sure to include the frustrations you are sure to encounter so that nothing will catch you by surprise.

iCupcake

So several weeks ago – I know, I probably should have written about it like…at least in the same month that I actually undertook this project. But I didn’t. – I had the opportunity to go home for Thanksgiving. Which was amazing because it’s really been too long since I’ve been home and I was starting to forget what home even looked like. An exaggeration, but oh well.

Honestly though, sometimes it is difficult to remember. My mom’s very into redecorating and she’s finally got the time and the ability now that we’re not little kids anymore. So the last couple times I’ve been home, the house has been totally different.

I digress; Both my father and my little brother have birthdays in the month of November. The little brother’s is on the 20th, which happened to be the day that we were going out to see them and my Dad’s is on the 28th. So, being that I’m slightly insane, I decided that the best way to celebrate these birthdays would be to make a cake for my little brother, a batch of cupcakes for my Dad, and then drive them 15 hours across 7 different states.

If you’re feeling slightly impressed by me and my daring, this is a totally normal reaction and I can only thank you. If you’re thinking how stupid I must be for doing this and how crazy the people I was traveling with were for letting me do it…yes. Yes, we are.

The point of the story is that all of the cupcakes and the cake actually survived the entire trip! It’s kind of astounding. And because of the good fortune we had transporting them, I decided to share with you all some pictures of what these daring little cupcakes and brave big cake looked like.

Jam Filled White Cupcakes

So, as I mentioned in my Peanut Butter, Jelly Time post, I’ve got some recipes for all of you!
As far as the complexity of recipes go, this one’s fairly simple. But if you’re wondering about everything that could potentially go wrong with it, you don’t have to look any further than that post. If you get as frustrated as I did, you deserve a high five. If you don’t, you probably need to be awarded a gold medal. But anyway, these things happen…

I don’t have pictures at the moment (I’m not smart enough to foresee and predict the need for those kinds of convenient things), but the next time I’ll make them, I’ll try to remember to take pictures along the way and add them into this post later on.

Yellow Cupcakes

I know yellow cupcakes are a pretty simple recipe, but I figured they’d be a good one to start off with! They’re also the staple of those jam filled cupcakes my last post was about, so I figured I’d do what I promised and finally post that whole recipe up here for you guys.

Yellow Cupcakes

Ingredients:

2 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour

2 teaspoons baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

2 sticks of butter

1 1/4 cups of sugar

3 eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla

2/3 cup milk

Instructions:

1. Crank the oven up to 350 and let it heat up. Cupcake liners should be tossed into the spots in the cupcake pan so you don’t have to put up with any messy cleanup at the end (cause nothing sucks quite as much as dishes do).

2. Technically, you’re supposed to mix the flour, baking powder and salt (all the dry ingredients) into a bowl and leave that on the side. If we’re being honest, I never ever do that. I always wait until all of the other stuff has been mixed together and then add in the dry on its own. Either way works. You’re still going to end up with delicious cupcakes at the end!

3. Beat the sticks of butter together. This is a lot easier if you have an electric mixer. But labor points if you’re beating this stuff together by hands. A for effort.

4. Add the sugar to your butter soup. This is done best in 1/4 cup increments. This is part of the recipe that I actually follow. It’s just easier to mix if you add it in gradually. You’ll probably have to scrape the sides of the bowl a couple of times, just to make sure it’s all being mixed. If you’re using an electric mixer, leave it to mix the sugar and butter for about 2 minutes.

5. Add the dry stuff! If you mixed that stuff together already, you’re way more awesome than I am. If you haven’t, toss in the baking powder and salt and mix. Then start adding the milk and the flour. If you mix a 1/2 cup of flour, let it mix, and then add a 1/3 cup of milk, it keeps the mixture from getting too clumpy and solid and too liquid. Keep alternating that until you’ve added all of the flour and all the milk.

6. Fill your cupcake cups!

7. At 350 degrees, it typically only takes 20-22 minutes for these cakes to cook through. I would check them at 20 minutes – they’ll most likely be done. The most they’ll take is 25 minutes. Don’t forget to check them with a toothpick or knife or something to make sure that they’re cooked through – it should come out clean!

Peanut Butter, Jelly Time!

Okay, so it’s not really peanut butter jelly time since I don’t eat peanut butter…but it is time for me to share my very first recipe! Because I’ve been in a cupcake baking mood over the last few weeks, I’ve been trying to be a bit more daring with the cupcake recipes I’ve been trying out.
And this means fillings!
Spoiler alert: Filling cupcakes is tougher than you think. It’s not impossible…it’s just messy! Especially if you’re a beginner like me. Read on for the rest of this debacle:
The first time I tried filling a cupcake, I elected to use a chocolate ganache. The cupcake itself was a lemon vanilla cupcake that I had made earlier in the day. Unfortunately, I don’t own any fancy cupcake coring tools and I don’t have a special tool for actually holding the filling so…I elected to use an icing bag with a large circle tip.
